Rough play factors:
ASSESS YOUR LIE. The first order of business is assessing your lie. Is the ball sitting up or down in the grass? If sitting down, just pitch it out. If it’s sitting pretty, go for it. The key is to select the right landing spot back out in the fairway. So select a very specific landing spot back out into the short hairs. HOVER THE CLUB so it doesn’t snag on your takeaway. Play the ball in the middle of your stance. Place more weight on your front foot. Grip down an inch or so and stand closer to the ball. This will promote a steeper backswing and a cleaner strike.I like a firmer grip pressure to ensure the clubface doesn’t get caught up in the rough through impact.
ACCELERATE THROUGH FOR SUCCESS. It’s critical to accelerate through with lots of clubhead speed. The grass will impede your contact with the ball. If you slow down through impact or simply chop it, you may find the ball still in the rough. Power through to get it back in the fairway.
FOR APPROACH SHOTS INTO THE GREEN: If the ball is sitting up, then take one less club than you normally would. The more grass between the club and the ball, the hotter the ball will come off the club; meaning the ball will have less spin.
