Make a turn!
We need clubhead speed from the bunker, and a fake turn will not do.
YES backswing: In this turn, my sternum, arms, and shoulders are rotating as one unit; producing a connected backswing with good bunker action results.
NO backswing: I am battling the lazy sternum syndrome where I lifted my hands up and my chest still points toward the ball. This is an arms-only swing. My chest still points toward the ball. This backswing action will lead to no bunker action. Fake turns won’t do!
It’s called a backswing because our back faces the target.
