Christina Ricci’s Tip of the Week
Light a Match
in the bunker
A fantastic tip by the Legend Gary Player
As Gary Player said, we need to light a match in the bunker to get the ball out. What that translates to is simple: We need to accelerate the clubhead through the sand to get the ball out.
For success, we need to do this with a smooth, not jerky tempo, otherwise that ball is going flying… or nowhere.
When I am in the bunker, my focus is loose hands, arms, and shoulders with zero tension. I have to consciously think this because I tend to tighten my grip through impact sending the ball flying over the green. To help me achieve this, I literally turn my club upside down and let gravity drop the club as I rotate through the shot. This helps me achieve that must-have smooth, fluid bunker splash.
