A pre-shot routine is as important on the putting surface as it is on the tee or in the fairway.
It keeps you focused on the task at hand—making the putt without distraction.
Read for break and slope and give yourself enough room to see the break and slope. Do not read the green too close to the hole. Get low to see the line and subtle undulations in the break. From behind the ball, you can see the line better; or at the ball, my preference. This method also sends a signal to your brain about the speed. Step into the ball by aiming the clubface first {bodylines behind the ball}. Select an intermediate target {white circle}. It is easier to aim for a spot a few inches in front of you than 4 feet. Set yourself by making sure your feet, hips, and shoulders are parallel to the putt’s target line.
