Always select a landing spot for shots around the green!
The goal around the green is the 3-foot circle. The pros get really good around the greens with soft hands, good tempo, and selecting the best club and landing spot to achieve this.
Recreational players, on the other hand, typically go for the pin. What ends up happening: Their ball lands at or near the pin and rolls right on by…or if they get lucky, it goes in. But we can’t rely on luck all the time. The sure bet is to assess the situation and select the right spot. To do this, walk up to the green to check out the lay of the land.
In this scenario, I have minimal green with a bit of elevation to the front portion. It then slopes down, so my landing spot should be just into the green. With this landing spot, I’ll allow the slope to take the ball to the hole.
